On New Year's Day, 1998, Kira NY took its place among the salons of the Upper West Side in Manhattan. Since then the group has held weekly meetings (with a summer recess) in New York City. Each meeting consists of a topic presentation, either by an invited visitor or by a member of the group, followed by general discussion.
Topics have included a range of issues pertaining to:
- science (reductionism, (in)determinism, the relation between science and experience, empiricism, holism in quantum mechanics),
- religion (Buddhism, meditation), and
- consciousness (the Tucson conferences, conceptions of self and the mind-body problem, the role of language in therapy, the nature/nurture opposition)
There were also a special report on the history and activities of the Synergy Institute, and on one of the Mind & Life Dialogues with the Dalai Lama which had been attended by two Kira members. Kira NY held 24 meetings in 1998 and 1999. We may resume our meetings at some future date, but there are no current activities scheduled
